Compiles and analyzes geologic and hydrologic data, performs computer modeling activities; develops, calibrates, and uses numerical groundwater and surface-water models to evaluate the effectiveness of water resource conservation measures and management strategies; identifies data and conceptual uncertainties and their overall importance to model results; estimate aquifer recharge from contributing watersheds and stream flow responses to rainfall events; provides feedback to Aquifer Science program regarding areas for further study to reduce model uncertainties; presents results of modeling and data analyses in written technical reports and presentations to management and stakeholder groups; uses geographic information systems to manage and evaluate geospatial data and to develop model input data sets; uses computer programming techniques assist in complex data analyses, processing raw data to suitable format for model inputs, and to automate batch model simulations; uses inverse parameter estimation optimization methods to assist in model calibrations and to evaluate and rank conceptual and parameter uncertainties.

Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrology, engineering, or a closely related field; plus a minimum of five years of progressive responsibility; or Master’s degree plus a minimum of three years of relevant modeling experience; or a Ph.D. plus one year of experience with research focus on numerical hydrologic modeling; mastery of advanced concepts, principles, and practices of groundwater hydrology and numerical modeling of groundwater and surface-water systems; advanced experience with MODFLOW groundwater modeling software and user interfaces (Groundwater Vistas experience is a plus); experience using geographic information systems to create and manage geospatial data sets used in model development; experience in programing techniques (e.g., Python, C++, Fortran, Visual Basic) to process, analyze, and format data for model input, and to automate batch model runs; experience with inverse parameter estimation methods (PEST software experience is a plus); a desire to research and develop advanced modeling techniques in a collaborative team setting; ability to explain complex technical aspects in non-technical terms to the public; strong research and analytical skills; effective oral, written, time management and organizational skills; ability to exercise initiative, independent judgment and responsibility; valid driver's license; and ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Job performance may require: listening, seeing, sitting, talking; occasional reaching, grasping, lifting, handling, pulling or pushing, balancing and carrying of items such as boxes of materials, books, etc. with weights not exceeding 25 pounds; limited walking, standing, stooping, and bending; some irregular hours and long workdays and moderate levels of stress. Job is performed primarily in an office environment with infrequent trips to other offices and limited exposure to weather conditions.
